DRAFT <br />H:\JANICE\ORDWORK\ASSISTANT CHIEF <br />ORDINANCE NO. <br />AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PARIS, <br />PARIS, TEXAS, AMENDING ARTICLE I TO CHAPTER 26 OF THE CODE <br />OF ORDINANCES OF THE CITY OF PARIS TO ADOPT A NEW SECTION <br />26-2 THERETO, AUTHORIZING THE CHIEF OF POLICE OF THE CITY <br />OF PARIS, IN ACCORDANCE WITH SECTION 143.014 OF THE LOCAL <br />GOVERNMENT CODE, TO APPOINT THE ASSISTANT CHIEF OF <br />POLICE; MAKING OTHER FINDINGS AND PROVISIONS RELATED TO <br />THE SUBJECT; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. <br />WHEREAS, Chapter 143, at Section 143.014 of the Loca1 Government Code (the Civil <br />Service Act), provides a process whereby the governing body of a municipality whose police <br />department is subject to the provisions of Chapter 143 of the Local Government Code, may <br />authorize the Chief of Police to appoint that person occupying an authorized position in the <br />classification immediately below that of Chief of Police, in accordance with the aforesaid Section <br />143.014; and <br />WHEREAS, the prerequisites for a department being eligible for such authorization under <br />Section 143.014 with regard to the City of Paris Police Department have in all things been <br />satisfied; and <br />WHEREAS, the classification in the City of Paris Police Department immediately below <br />that of Chief of Police is Assistant Chief of Police; and <br />WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Paris desires to authorize the Chief of Police <br />to appoint the individual to fill the classification position of Assistant Chief of Police as provided <br />in Section 143.014; NOW, THEREFORE, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COLTNCIL OF THE CITY OF PARIS, PARIS, <br />TEXAS: <br />Section 1. That the findings set out in the preamble to this ordinance are hereby in all <br />things approved. <br />Section 2. That there is hereby adopted a new Section 26-2 to Chapter 26, Article I of the <br />Code of Ordinances of the City of Paris, said Section 26-2 to be entitled "Appointment of assistant <br />chief of police" and to read as follows: <br />
