<br />What is a Home Occupation? I <br /> <br />Operating a home business requires approval <br />from Planning & Development Services. Home <br />operated businesses are defined in the Zoning <br />Ordinance as "any gainful occupation engaged <br />in by an occupant of a dwelling unit." Examples <br />of home occupations are: <br /> <br />Complete the Application <br />The application requests information to confirm ' <br />that the proposed business meets the following <br />conditions: <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The use is clearly incidental and secondary <br />to the residential use of the home. <br /> <br />. Handicrafts <br /> . <br />. Dressmaking <br />. Laundering <br />. Home offices <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Teaching music, dancing, art, etc. to no more <br />than five pupils at a time <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Home beauty salon with no more than one <br />chair or work station <br /> <br />Review of home occupations by the City of Boise <br />helps to maintain property values by ensuring <br />that the location and structure of the business do <br />not adversely affect the character of a residential <br />neighborhood. <br /> <br />Application Procedure <br />Contact PDS for an Application <br />Give the address and briefly describe the type of <br />home occupation desired. Applications may be <br />picked up at the Planning office, or downloaded <br />from our website at www.cityofboise.org/pds. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The business will be conducted entirely <br />within the dwelling or an accessory structure, <br />such as a garage or workshop. However, <br />an occupation conducted by means of a home <br />computer linked to a mobile telecommuni- <br />cations network m&y be allowed. <br /> <br />The total of all floor space devoted to home <br />occupations is not more than 500 square <br />feet. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The character of the dwelling will be main- <br />tained in appearance, cleanliness, quietness <br />and residential appearance. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The business does not store or use any highly <br />combustible materials or work on internal <br />combustion engines. <br /> <br />The size, weight, or power of equipment and <br />tools used in the home occupation do not <br />exceed that of normal household tools and <br />equipment. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />No items produced or repaired by the <br />business will be stored or displayed so as to <br />be visible from the outside the building. <br /> <br />Only articles produced on the premises are <br />sold or offered for sale. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The home occupation will not cause any <br />abnormal automotive or pedestrian traffic, <br />exterior unsightliness, or emission of odor, <br />dust, smoke, noise, glare, heat, vibration or <br />other exterior disturbance. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The business may have one employee in <br />addition to the owner, if a suitable off-street <br />parking space is provided in addition to the <br />parking spaces required for the residence. <br /> <br />The application also requires a brief writ- <br />ten statement describing the proposed home <br />occupation. The description should include infor- <br />mation such as the type of business, equipn1ent <br />used, operating hours and the average number of <br />people per day expected to come to the home for <br />products or services. <br /> <br />Also explain any problems or conflicts the <br />business may have with the zoning <br />requirelnents or criteria. <br /> <br /> <br />The Planning Division <br />requires that in addition <br />to the application, a list of <br />signatures of all neigh- <br />bors within 300 feet of the <br />subject property, indicat- <br />ing that they have been <br />
