TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION NO. 40 <br />WELDING CARBON STEEL <br />40.01 GENERAL <br />A. All welding performed on the tank or structure will be done in <br />accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) Structural Welding <br />Code D1.1. <br />B. All metal used for the fabrication of manways, hatches, ladders or other such <br />accessories to be permanently welded to the tank or structure will meet the <br />specifications of ASTM A36 Group One carbon steel with a minimum yield <br />point of 36,000 I'SI. <br />C. All material must be purch e No r d of foreign s teel wlill be al w ed. <br />provided to document sam purchase <br />40.02 WELDING PROCESS <br />All welders will be qualified under the AWS D1.1 code with shielded metal arc <br />welding (SMAW) procedures. Minimum plate thickness for welding test will be 1/2" <br />using E6010 or E7018 electrodes. Welders will only weld in positions for which they <br />have been tested and qualified. <br />40.03 WELD SIZE <br />The minimum filet weld size shall be as follows: <br />1/4" -1/i' base metal thickness = 3/16" fillet weld <br />over lh " - 3/4" base metal thickness =1/4' fillet weld <br />over 3/4" -1" base metal thickness = 5/16" fillet weld <br />40.04 SYMBOLS AND DEFINITIONS <br />Standard symbols and definitions will be as stated in the AWS Code D1.1. <br />TS40-1 <br />~ ~ 470 <br />
