Special City Council Meeting
February 13, 2001
Page 4
Lake Crook Sportsmans Association, and in polling their 300 members, they
are all in agreement on the recreational development of the Lake Crook
area. Mr. Dudley said that critical to development for a recreational area is
getting waterand sewerand adequate restroom facilities forevents thattake
place at the lake. Mr. Dudley said that currently there are no facilities like
that. Mr. Dudley said there are opportunities for company picnics, family
reunions, all types of functions that could be held there with adequate
facilities. He said they would like to see camping areas developed in the
park area. This could be in the northeast corner of the lake where there is
good accessability from Highway 1499. Afee could be realized by the city for
allowing campers to camp. Mr. Dudley said they support that area being
developed for hiking trails, biking trails, a larger fishing pier that is lighted
with a cover, and security gates.
Dennis Johnson, 1303 LamarAve., real estate agent and general contractor,
came forward stating that he has enjoyed growth and good economy over
the past years and felt that residential development would be a plus for the
City of Paris.
Glenn Bryan, Route 1, Box 60-A, Blossom, Texas, was present stating that
he is not a citizen of Paris but he works in Paris, and in the spring, summer
and fall he is at the archery range at Lake Crook. Mr. Bryan said he also
utilizes the lake for duck hunting and fishing. Mr. Bryan pointed out that
there is a security gate into the lake area, but a lot of the time it is not open
and he would like to see a manned gate. Mr. Bryan did not agree with the
residential area being developed.
Don Wilson, 3110 Stacy Lane, appeared before the City Council in support
of both the recreational aspect of the lake as well as development. He sees
development not as just adding another subdivision to Paris. There should
be a method or way to encourage large developers to come in and build a
golf course or something in conjunction with the homes. This would
encourage people to move into that area from out of town, especially retired
people. Mr. Wilson stated that retired people would be the key to increasing
our economic base in Paris. Mr. Wilson pointed out that we go out and
spend all kinds of money trying to entice businesses to get 500 employees
here, but if we could get 500 retired people here, we would bring the same
amount of income to the city. Mr. Wilson said it would not burden the
schools or the police department, and it would add to our economic base
because we would not have to abate the taxes for seven or ten years. He
said the city would receive income immediately from those homes. Mr.
