City Council Meeting
January 8, 2001
Page 14
station, which enabled them to pump the wastewater into the Flow
Equalization Basin in orderto maintain the wastewater system. Therewas
144 hours worked by personnel of the Wastewater and Lift Station
Divisions. The City Manager advised that the city did have to employ
outside Sanitation Companies to come and pump some of the lift stations
at a cost of approximately $8,600.00. Total cost in wages and materials
was $24,497.00 and the value of the lost water production brought the total
estimated lost of $46,497.00, and he felt that Mr. Campbell and his
employees did an outstanding job in keeping this situation from being
worse than it was.
City Manager Malone also complemented Rick Hundley, the Electrical
Inspector, for the City of Paris, as many of the electrical services were
pulled away from homes and had to be restored, and in most cases,
inspected before the power could be reconnected to citizen's homes. Mr.
Hundley did a total of 244 electrical inspections totaling 71 man hours
from December 26t" through December 31St
City Manager Malone said the Street, Traffic, Parks & R.O.W., Water and
Sewer, and Engineering Divisions worked 959 total overtime hours for
this payroll, and on the evening that the ice storm occurred the crews
came in and were ready for the storm by sanding the streets. They also
assisted with brush pick up, with the exception of the Water and Sewer
Division, because they were working on their problems.
City Manager Malone had an estimate of about 100,000 cubic yards of
brush on the ground and that would be five times the annual amount of
brush that the city would pick up. He said the city began staging the brush
to be brought to the Public Works back lot and as it filled up,
arrangements were made to utilize the city's property at the Lamar County
Fairgrounds and asked the public to bring their limbs and brush to that
location. Also a great deal of the brush that the city picked up was taken
to the city's compost site. The City Manager said they were still
encouraging citizens to take their brush to the fairgrounds site.
City Manager Malone advised that the trash pick up was postponed on
Tuesday, December 26t", but it did resume on December 27t" with the crews
working through Saturday.
