City Council Meeting
January 8, 2001
Page 13
containing business records. The adjoining buildings received smoke and
water damage, but no fire damage. City Manager Malone advised the
estimated cost of the fire is over $100,000.00, and wanted to let the City
Council know, from his personal observation, itwas a tremendous fire and
the Fire Department and all the men in the Fire Department did a
tremendous job of bringing that fire under control. City Manager Malone
said he felt this was due to the fact that the Fire Department is better
trained and with up to date equipment, they are able handle this type fire.
City Manager Malone advised the Council of the seriousness of the loss of
power at Pat Mayse raw water pumping station on December 25t" which
occurred about 4:30 P. M. and remained off until December 27t". He
described as more serious the situation of power to the Water Treatment
Plant going off about 3:21 P.M. on December 26t" and that we were unable
to have power restored for 9 hours and 44 minutes. He praised the
personnel of the Utilities Department, who, under the direction of Herb
Campbell did a tremendous job in maintaining pressure in the system.
They had made sure their tanks remained at appropriate levels and they
had plenty of backup facilities in effect and with good power planning, they
were able to keep the system from depressurizing long enough for the
power to be restored. City Manager Malone advised that there was about
12 million gallons of water production lost, which would equate to
approximately $22,000.00. Power was also lost to the master lift
station, which is the station that pumps all the wastewater from Paris up
to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The lines were down and the 300
horsepower motors were submerged in wastewater, and the employees
did a great job in getting those motors out and taking them to Mt.
