Ms. McAllister said that Lori Bachman, who is on the Board
for the Lamar County Chapter of the American Red Cross, has talked to Judge
Superville and some of the County Commissioners regarding this matter.
Max Weinberg, who is also on the Board for the Lamar County Chapter of the
American Red Cross, was also present. He read the letter addressed to City
Councilman John Bell from Lamar County Judge Superville regarding the
request for the donation of the ambulance and discussed his and the
Commissioners Court's support to lend financial assistance to facilitate the
transfer of the ambulance to the Lamar County Chapter of the American Red
Cross.
Ms. Bachman advised that she had a meeting with Judge Superville and the
Judge told her that he was willing to come to the table with the City and work
on designing a resolution so the Red Cross can get the ambulance. Ms.
Bachman said Judge Superville had requested that Council Members be
appointed by resolution to discuss this issue with him and table the issue and
come back in a couple of weeks with an agreement.
Ms. McAllister informed the City Council that Lamar County has given the
Red Cross a certain amount of money each month so that they may keep their
disaster plan up-to-date and offer disaster services. She said that since 1988
Lamar County has given them over $18,000.00. Ms. McAllister also pointed
out that since August, there have been 12 major fires and eight of those were
within the city limits. The Red Cross has given each one of those families who
experienced fires from three to six hundred dollars each and she indicated that
approximately 80% of the disasters they deal with are within the city limits.
City Manager Malone advised Ms. McAllister that the City of Paris furnished
office space and utilities for the Lamar County Chapter of the American Red
Cross for many years and that practice only ended when the Red Cross chose
to move into the building owned by Paris Junior College.
