Originally settled in 1841, the City incorpo-
rated in 1938.

Cedar Hill's growth has been phenomenal, from a population of2,500 in 1970; 6,850 in 1980; to
19,000 in 1990. Today's estimated population is 30,000, with continued fast-paced growth ex-
pected to continue into the next century when "build out" at an expected population of60,000 to
80,000 is reached. Contributing factors in this rapid development are its close proximity to Dal-
las (twenty miles south of downtown), its beautiful, cedar-crested hills and the construction of
the 7,500 acre Joe Pool Lake. Some of the finest residential lots in the DallasIFort Worth
Metroplex overlook the lake.

Cedar Hill is rapidly evolving ITom a traditional "bedroom" community to a mixed-use commu-
nity with a major commercial, retail and light industrial presence. The City is situated on State
Highway 67, close to interstate highways, has excellent rail service and is less than a half-hour
drive ITom two major airports, Dallas Love Field and DallasIFort Worth International Airport.
The City owns and operates, through its Cedar Hill Economic Development Corporation, the 150
acre Cedar Hill Business Park with rail-served light industrial sites. The tax base of the commu-
nity has experienced recent diversification with the opening of a Home Depot and a Kohl's De-
partment store, Site development is underway for another major retail center with nationally rec-
ognized anchor stores. In combination with the Cedar Hill Independent School District and Dal-
las County, Cedar Hill offers a triple Freeport tax exemption to eligible industries. The City's
economic development efforts are funded through a 4A sales tax and the 4B sales tax funds
