<br />THE POSITION <br /> <br />'Ine City Manager is designated as the chief <br />administrative officer for the City and is <br />charged with the day-to-day management of <br />the City organization. The City Manager has <br />the power under the City Charter to appoint, <br />suspend and remove all employees and <br />appointive administrative officers of the City <br />except those subject to approval by the <br />Council under the Charter or other state laws. <br />'Ine Charter requires the City Manager to be a <br />resident of the City. <br /> <br />The position of City Manager will soon be <br />vacant due to the retirement of the current <br />incumbent, Roy McDanieL Mr. 1'.!cDaniel has <br />served the City of Abilene for 24 years. He <br />has served as City Manager for over four years <br />and prey-ious!y served as Director of Finance, <br />Assistant City Manager and Acting City <br /> <br />Manager. Mr. McDaniel will remain with the <br />City until his successor is appointed. <br /> <br />The descripti,-e term that is mentioned time <br />after time in discussing the requirements of <br />this position with Council members and <br />others in the community is "leadership", The <br />next City Manager must be a strong leader <br />who has an ability to direct the staff and the <br />community through a process of further <br />defining the future vision of the communitY <br />and then building consensus and coalitions t~ <br />accomplish the vision of the Council. The <br />Council will want a person who has the high- <br />ley-c1 communication and interper">nal skills <br />needed to be an effective representative of the <br />City to the community as well as the media. <br />He or she will havoc demonstrated an ability to <br />build and maintain positive and productive <br />relationships with a wide range of community <br />and governmental groups and organintions <br />and should also be comfortable in actively and <br />visibly representing the City. <br /> <br /> <br />1 <br />ð <br />(:-= <br /> <br />~. - :---'~.,;;!; <br />------'.'",--:-"'-'--- <br /> <br />New Central Fire Station <br />
