<br /> <br />The Community <br /> <br />The Town of Vail is located in Eagle <br />County, approximately 100 miles <br /> <br />west of Denver on Interstate 70. The <br />town encompasses 13 square miles in the scenic <br /> <br />Colorado Rocky Mountains. The town has 4,500 <br />permanent residents, 5,000 second homeowners, <br /> <br />and as many as 30,000 daily guests during the peak <br /> <br />winter season. Vail's economy IS driven heavily by <br /> <br />tourism with over 1.6 million skier visits each year. <br /> <br />At an elevation of 8,150 feet, the Town of Vall is ten <br /> <br />miles long, one mile wide, surrounded by 350,000 <br /> <br />acres of White River National Forest land, and <br /> <br />crowned by 5,289 skiable acres on one of the <br />largest ski mountains in the world. <br /> <br />Vail celebrates the distinction of being the grand- <br /> <br />est and finest ski mountain in North America, <br /> <br />having been recognized by Ski Magazine as the #1 <br /> <br />Ski Resort in North America 11 times over the <br /> <br />past 15 years. With world-renowned skiing, <br />golfing, hiking, fine dining and breathtaking views, <br /> <br />Vail is unquestionably the finest destination resort <br />community in the world. It is, however, much <br /> <br />more than a vacation spot. Vail is a thriving <br />community with excellent schools, outstanding <br /> <br />recreational facilities and more designated open <br />space than any resort community in the United <br /> <br />States, Vail has played host to the 1989 and 1999 <br />World Alpine Ski Championships. <br /> <br />Much of Vail's charm comes from its unique alpine <br />village and pedestrian system. Althou9h winter <br /> <br />continues to draw most of the area's visitors, an <br /> <br />nation's third largest ski haven. Vail <br />has a Council-Manager form of <br /> <br />government with a seven-member <br />Town Council elected at-large. <br /> <br />The Town of Vail has a total of 220 <br />full.time employees plus 100 <br /> <br />seasonal workers in the winter and <br /> <br />50 in the summer. Direct reports <br />to the Town Manager include the <br /> <br />Assistant Town Manager, Commu- <br />nity Information Officer, Fire Chief, <br /> <br />Police Chief, Community Develop- <br />ment Director, Public Works and <br /> <br />Transportation Director, Finance <br />Director, Information Systems <br /> <br />Director, and the Human Re- <br />sources Director <br /> <br />The town has a $33.5 million <br /> <br />annual budget and provides <br /> <br />essential services such as police <br /> <br />and fire protection, a free transit <br />system, plus additional services <br /> <br />to accommodate Vail's guests. It <br />is town policy to budget revenues <br /> <br /> <br />conservatively, using the best analytical and <br />practical data available.
