<br />staff of 28 and 2003/2004 budget of <br />approximately $9.7 million. <br /> <br />DWP provides domestic water service <br />and fire flows to approximately 15,000 <br /> <br />residential and commercial customers <br /> <br />including the entire City of Big Bear <br />Lake, Moonrldge, and Sugarloaf, tne <br /> <br />northern half of Erwin lake, lake <br /> <br />Williams, Fawnskin, Rim Forest and <br />portions of Big Bear City. DWP enjoys <br /> <br />and strives to maintain an over 90% <br /> <br />customer satisfaction level. <br /> <br />The Department is responsible for testing <br />and monitoring the water system to <br /> <br />ensure a safe water supply that meets <br />State and Federal regulations. Big Bear <br /> <br />Valley is unique IC that all drinking water <br /> <br />IS obtained from the snow and rain that <br /> <br />percolates into the ground; no lake or <br />imported water is available for drinking. <br /> <br />Key components of the water system <br />Include adequate wells and reservoirs to <br /> <br />meet peak holiday weekend demands; <br />replacement of old, leaky and undersized <br /> <br />steel mainlines to provide adequate fIre <br />flow; and ongoing/recurring rehabilitation <br /> <br />of older system components to assure <br />reliable service. <br /> <br />The Department currently operates, <br />maintains, and monitors 33 well sites, <br /> <br /> <br />13 booster stations. 17 reser- <br />voirs, 15 chlorinating stations, 20 <br /> <br />sample stations, and hundreds of <br />pressure reducing valves. DWP installs, <br /> <br />replaces and repairs hundreds of fire <br />hydrants within the water system as <br /> <br />well as maintaining, replacing, and <br />repairing 167 miles of mainlines, 14,200 <br /> <br />meters, meter boxes and service lines, <br /> <br />and 3,000 mainline valves. <br /> <br />In its fifth consecutive year of drought, <br />DWP is faced with the challenge of <br /> <br />ICcreased water demands and assuring <br /> <br />adequate water supplies for its custom- <br />ers. The Department is focusing its <br /> <br />attention on developing new wells and <br /> <br />completing two manganese treatment <br />facilities. DWP continues to educate the <br /> <br />community on water issues and encour- <br />age conservation. Most importantly, <br /> <br />DWP is actively pursuing water reuse as <br />a supplemental source of water for the <br /> <br />Valley.
