Page 2
Project:
1. 24th Street S. E., between College and Jefferson Rd.
Cost Estimate by Engineering Department:
Note: Cost for additional right of way, if required is not included.
Mr. Jimmy Hall, Resident Engineer with the Texas Highway Department
told the Committee they were looking for projects for 1988 through 1992
to submit to the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation
for funding through the Federal Aid to Urban System Program. Mr. Hall
said this was a program similar to the one we have just completed.
What the Highway Department is asking the City of Paris is to submit
recommendations that would be a great benefit to the City of Paris.
Mr. Hall said some of the types of projects would be overlay greater
than one inch, new construction, reconstruction, traffic control,
planking for Railroad crossings, these are projects that would be
eligible to become a project under this program. Mr. Hall said the
City should submit recommendations to the local Texas Highway
Department, they in turn will submit them to their District, there they
will be compared with others in the District for allocation.
Approximately 3 to 4 million dollars are available for District number
one, and would like for the City of Paris to get their fair share of
the funds.
City Manager Malone asked if Martin Luther King Drive was on the Urban
System map. Mr. Hall said it was not on their map, that it should be
added as it is a collector Street, and further stated that those street
that could qualify would be minor arterial streets, major streets, and
collector streets.
Discussion was had regarding adding additional street to the map. Mr.
Hall suggested the City submit a letter to the Texas Highway Department
requesting consideration be given to putting these on the Urban System
Map.
Joe McCollum, Director of Community Development said the City would
like to submit a revised map, and suggested that it be revised and
submitted to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council,
get their recommendation and forward to the Highway Department.
Discussion was had regarding the intersection at 20th N. E. and Martin
Luther King Drive. Mr. Hall said that it was a definite possibility to
get this on the map.
City Manager Malone asked Mr. Hall if this was added to our list of
recommendation, what would the Highway Department do. Mr. Hall said he
would first find out if it was eligible for the program.
After further discussion, it was the consensus of the Committee to
submit the recommendations as presented by Mr. Huddleston plus adding
the intersection of 20th N. E. at Martin Luther King Drive for
consideration.
