give, you are required to take an entrance exam and pass that exam
in order to be on the eligibility list. The eligibility list is taken from
the test, based on your score, and there are occasions where you
have people who have been a veteran of the military, and they are
allowed, if they have served enough and got an eligible honorable
discharge. Then, they would added that to their score. There are
requirements in there, and one is that they have to been in the
military. They have to present that to us prior to the time of taking
the test. From the eligibility list, the fire chief, or police chief ask me
for the top three names from that list, which I furnish to them. There
are two ways in which this is done. We have done it both ways. If
we are in a hurry to hire someone, we sometimes take all the
eligible people who have passed the test, and give them a physical
or assessment test. By this I mean, they are required to do some
physical activities, such as run a mile, either a mile or a mile and a
half, sit -ups, bench press, set and reach, and once they have
passed that, then that generally reduce's the field a little bit
because not everyone is in physical shape to do that. The top three
are given to the police chief or fire chief, and from there they are
interviewed by a committee at the Fire Department, or the Police
Department, which is composed of, generally, your deputy Chiefs
in the Fire Department, and in the Police Department Lt. Hundley,
Lt. Hodges. The three Lieutenants do the interviewing process.
But, it has to come from the eligibility list. Now we have an
additional thing that is going to be effective September the 1St, and
that is the Legislature just recently passed a law that allow sus to
give a entrance examination at another location, for example, a way
from Paris at the same time we are giving one here in Paris, so we
could go to a college, or another location. We could go to another
town and give the same time, the same test that we give here. Give
both at the same time and you would develop one roster list from
the test that was taken from the two locations. This is something
new, and the reason for it is because there is so much difficulty
right now in the recruitment, particularly in the Police Department.
Gray Can I say something.
Haynes Yes sir.
