Webb I tell you the problem is money, because, I could go anywhere else
and make more money than I can here. I love Paris, and I want to
tell you right now, I can go to Dallas or where ever and make from
anywhere from 10 to 15 thousand dollars more a year, and it is hard.
We have the same problem at Paris Jr. College, it is hard to
convince them to stay here. You know, we started a program - grow
your on, because we had a problem hiring minorities at Paris Jr.
College, which I am in charge of that problem. We have been
working on it. They gave them scholarship money. I would go out,
would recruit the minority scholarships students. I put them
through Paris Jr. College. I graduated them, I just hope they come
back. There is no guarantee that they will come back. We have two
that came back, out of, I think we have been doing it for, I think, ten
years now. I think we had two to come back. Trent Price is one that
is working at Paris Jr. College he is one, but you know, we started
that program when I was there, and you have to grow you own. If
once they go out of the community, you can't convince them,
because once they go out, they go to Dallas. They don't pay those
firemen anywhere, you know the price and such, and how can you
convince one of them to come from Dallas to Paris to make
$15,000.00 a year less. They will look at you like you are crazy.
Graves Let me say this, what you do is talk to him and say, well you come to
a nice community, you are on a waiting list there is Dallas, and
probably it will be 10 or 15 years before you move up, you see. Look
at the situation they have now on the police force , I mean, some of
those officers there have been there for years, but now the
opportunity is there for them, so if you can convince those young
men, and you can talk to them and show them the possibilities.
Money is not all. What are these people doing now.
Webb I know it is not all, but you've got to look at our community and look
at the makeup, though. The first thing is what is there to do for me.
I am a black man in Paris.
Graves That is why we are here today is to make it better.
Webb Yes, I know we are here to make it better. I am just giving you our
concern. I know it is really hard to recruit.
