sample a little bit of it. I got all the sampling I wanted real quick.
Uncle Sam sent me on a little trip to solve the worlds problems.
Malone One of the things we need to point out, or recognize is that there is
very little turnover in the fire department. The fire department job
is desirable to those people who like that for a career, and they
work 24 on and 48 off, and they have another sideline career that
they are involved in generally. There is a lot more turnover in the
police department and more opportunity to hire. We have just hired
six when we created new positions, and there is only going to be
possibly three more positions created, and if we don't have
minorities to take that test, then you can't hire minorities in the fire
department no matter what anybody wants. If they are not involved
in taking the test, they will not be on the list and can't be hired. That
is the law.
Harris How much recruitment have you done like at four year universities.
Burgin Not a whole lot at the universities.
Harris I was about to say that I have done quite a bit of recruitment
especially in minorities at the four year universities, and very
seldom I find a black kid that wants to be a fireman.
Webb If they are going to get a four year degree that is not what they want
to do.
Burgin You know, the way I look at it, firefighter's job is an old rawboned
working job. If a man has got a college degree, he usually has his
sights on something besides being a firefighter and so, that has
been. We have recruited at colleges, yes, but to me, it is just the
opposite of where you need to be recruiting out in the community.
Harris I know that is.
Gray How many in your department have degrees.
Burgin Probably, I am guessing, under ten.
