MINUTES PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING July 15, 1987 The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session at 4 p.m., July 15, 1987 at the City Hall Annex Conference Room with Chairman Virginia Gibbs presiding. Present were Jackie Alsobrook, Reeves Hayter, Bill Hagood and Beth Shelton. Don Black, Francis Ellis, Jean Gibson, Rogene Patterson, and Robert Pierson were absent. Tiana Williams and Roslyn Sample of the Library, Mary Hanson and Daisy Redding of Paris Junior College, Mike Patterson of KPLT and Jeff Grimes of KBUS also attended. The minutes of the June 17th meeting were approved as mailed and the financial report and circulation report were distributed. The Board discussed the wording of the plaque for the new library building. Mrs. Gibbs will call Longview about the wording on their plaque. Tiana Williams shared the proposed wording, took board comments and will send board members a copy for final approval. Mary Hanson talked about a Texas Education Agency grant for literacy and introduced Daisy Redding, who will be coordinator for the Literacy Council for Lamar County, and explained that Ray Trier will be the VISTA volunteer. The library will be a site for this program. Ms. Williams discussed a proposed program for the opening of the library in October. She mentioned October 17, 18 or 25 as possible dates. The Board preferred October 18 at 2 p.m. with the private preview party to be held the night before on the 17th. The ceremony might include music (Paris High School band), welcome by the chairman of the Library Advisory Board, invocation by a local minister, flag ceremony, remarks by the mayor or his representative, introduction of important guests, remarks by the Director of the Library and ribbon cutting. A tour would follow. The board discussed having a concert by James David Robinson in a celebration in song. The board suggested that the concert be simultaneous to tours since there would not be room in the meeting room for all to attend. Mr. Lightfoot sent word through Ms. Williams that we need some major gifts. He suggested that we need six antique chairs for the Texana Room and that we need to have the Cisneros pictures rematted and reframed before hanging. The director reported that the Friends have been working on commemorative memorabilia for the opening. She showed a sample of a commemorative plate which would cost $14.95 and sell for $25.00. She asked for imput on the number. No consensus was reached. Notecards were also discussed. She also mentioned having something to give to everyone in attendance that day.
