Mr. Boots said a study several years ago indicated as much as $8,000 or $10,000
in books were stolen each year. Ms. Williams indicated there would have to be
extra hours of housekeeping involved for the staff to prepare for security through
the magnetic tape system of security.
Beth Shelton asked if the Genealogical Society had responded to the invitation
to be included in the new structure. Ms. Williams said she thought this slate
of officers were waiting to let the newly elected officers handle this.
Mrs. Shelton commented that Ms. Williams had helped judge the creative writing
contest at Paris Junior College and would be mentioned in the report. She re-
ported that the YWCA was obtaining pledges with $25,000 to date to renovate the
present structure and work for a swimming pool at the back, and the staff and
Board were pleased with present plans for the Library next door.
Ms. Williams reported a possible grant from NETLS might provide a micro - computer
for the Library as part of the automation project, and she had help from Bill
Hagood in preparing the lengthy application. This would provide much needed
help in the card files for members, purchases of books to help with the select -
tions needs, and with the budget. She would ask Betty Swasco to help. Helen Gies
could take the computer course with her at the college. She said a new VCR and
monitor costing $1,700 were in Dallas ready to be picked up.
Ms. Williams said she and Bill Lightfoot would attend the Texas Library Association
Convention in Fort Worth, April 8 -12 to look at furnishings. Rogene Patterson
said she would be there also.
Ms. Williams compared figures for February, 1985 with February, 1986:
Circulation . . . . 43,059 47,005
New Members . . . . 722 1,230
Interlibrary Loans. 50 75
Number of persons
in Library . 13,732 15,331
Ms. Williams reported the Altrusa Club wants to help with a Literacy Project,
and volunteers would be needed. A workshop will be held May 19 at Grand Saline.
She reported 44 at the first Texas Voices program, and 40 at the second with much
interest. She announced Dr. William T. Pilkington, President of the Western Lit-
erature Association would be present Sunday, April 6, at 2:30 P.M. for Michener's
TEXAS.
The meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
Date approved:
Frances Ellis, Secretary
