M I N U T E S
PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
September 16, 1987
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session at 4:00 P.M.
September 16, 1987 with the Secretary, Frances Ellis, presiding. Present were
Don Black, Beth Shelton, Rogene Patterson, Jean Gibson, Frances Ellis, and
Bill Hagood. Virginia Gibbs, Robert Pierson and Jackie Alsobrook were absent.
Tiana Williams and Roslyn Sample of the Library staff, Dick Boots from the City,
and Sally Cecil, President of the Friends of the Library, also attended.
Jean Gibson was recognized and welcomed as a new member of the Board.
The minutes of the September 3, 1987 called meeting were read by Beth
Shelton and approved.
The financial report was not discussed.
Gertiana Williams displayed samples of paper stock and embossing from
Bobbit's Advertising with a cost of $571.50 for the covers and $18.20 for
the unprinted insert paper.
Don Black moved that Bobbitt's bid for 1,000 copies of the printed cover
and the paper insert be accepted and that the insert be printed locally in
matching style. The motion was seconded and passed after a lengthy discussion
on the value of a high expenditure for this one item. The board agreed on
the value of the items for collector's pieces and payment will be made from
the Love Memorial Fund.
Director Williams discussed exhibits for the November 14 and 15 dedication
events. These exhibits include a series of photographs made by Marvin Gorley
of the Paris News while the building and expansion program was in progress.
These could be mounted in the auditorium. A second exhibit of historical
items and photographs was discussed and board members were asked to make
contributions.
She then displayed large colored photographs of nature scenes made by
Marva Joe who has offered four to the Library, to be framed at her expense.
After a discussion the Board agreed to consider the matter further with the
assistance of the Art Advisory Committee.
During the Director's Report Ms. Williams reported that an application
for a $3,500.00 Literacy Grant has been sent to NETLS. She announced that the
October 10 Book Sale to be held at the Library would include a bake sale
and members were asked to provide baked foods. She provided members with a
"wish list" for the Library and noted that the Friends of the Library are
setting up a committee to consider what would be given by them. The Board
agreed to further consideration of the "wish list" at another meeting.
She then asked members to help compile the invitation list for the
dedication events and said they should be mailed about three weeks before
November 14th. The invitations will be addressed by hand and volunteers are
needed for this and stuffing the envelopes. -
continued -
