MINUTES <br />PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD <br />CALLED MEETING <br />October 23, 1987 <br />The Advisory Board for the Paris Public Library met in <br />called session, October 23, 1987 at 1 p.m. with Don Black, <br />Chair, presiding. The purpose of the meeting was to consider <br />the Biggers painting commissioned for the Library. Attending <br />were ,Beth Shelton, Virginia Gibbs, Frances Ellis, Secretary; <br />Robert Pierson, Jackie Alsobrook, Bill Hagood, Tiana Williams, <br />Librarian; and Mike Malone, City Manager. Cathy Swaim of the <br />Arts Council also attended. <br />Chairman Black opened the meeting be stating that the <br />committee composed of Dr. Black, Mr. Hayter and Mr. Hagood <br />did not recommend accepting the painting by Dr. John Biggers <br />for these three reasons: <br />1) The painting did not fill the Contract. <br />2) The painting is not harmonious with the colors of <br />the library. <br />3) A substantial number of library patrons might be <br />offended. <br />Cathy Swaim explained the meaning of the painting which <br />was hung on the wall of the auditorium for the Board to see. <br />After lengthy discussion, members voted by ballot 5 to 2 <br />to accept the painting. Don Black resigned from the Board <br />and left the meeting. <br />The meeting was adjourned at 2 p.m. <br />Date approved: <br />Frances Ellis, Secretary <br />
