f r
M I N U T E S
PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
APRIL 20, 1988
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session on
April 20, 1988 in the Library auditorium. Chairman Bill Hagood presided
and these members were present: Virginia Gibbs, Beth Shelton, Jackie
Alsobrook, Jean Gibson and Frances Ellis, Secretary. Robert Pierson, Eric
Tate and Rogene Patterson were absent. Dick Boots, Director of the City's
Community Facilities; Roslyn Sample, Acting Director of the Library; Pamela
Sidnell, Youth Librarian; and Sally Cecil, President of the Friends of the
Library also attended.
Minutes of the February 17 meeting were approved as circulated.
Dick Boots led a discussion on restoring and reframing the Cisneros
sketches which were presented to the Library at a special exhibition on
November 17, 1948 by the PARIS NEWS. (They are of illustrations for the book,
THE RED RIVER VALLEY THEN AND NOW by A. W. Neville, published in 1958 by the
PARIS NEWS.) The Board agreed that Dick Boots should retrieve the sketches
from Perry Huston & Associates of Fort Worth who had quoted a charge of
$6,875 for conservation and framing of the prints. These prints were previously
valued by Valley House Gallery, Inc. of Dallas at $200 each for insurance purposes.
Mr. Boots will take the prints to the Welch Art Center which will charge
$484.00 to put new acid -free mats on them and reframe the 24 sketches.
Mrs. Gibbs moved that the small painting by Dr. Biggers be given to the
Chamber of Commerce. The motion was seconded, discussed and passed.
Mr. Hagood said that the Director of the Chamber of Commerce has requested
that all donations for the unpaid balance of $1,500 due on the Biggers' mural
in the library be channeled through the Library's Memorial Fund since the
Chamnber finds it cannot handle these contributions. Board members agreed to
this proposition.
Members then discussed a suitable memorial for the late Margaret Baker,
Librarian of the Paris Public Library for many years. Mr. Boots and Mrs...Sample
reported that Mrs. Baker's sister, Mrs. Don Black, Sr., and her daughter,
Linda Flannary had suggested that a picture of Mrs. Baker with an engraved plaque
be hung in the Library. Others suggested that a room be named for her, but
more research will be done to decide on a proper memorial.
Mr. Boots reported that the director's positon has been advertised in
appropriate professional journals and at Universities offering library science.
He noted that members of the staff may apply for the position and the City
Manager, City Personnel Director and he will decide on the applicant.
A discussion on Library hours was held and members agreed to return to a
schedule of 9 am to 6 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
continued on page 2
