Board members present were Beth Shelton, Virginia Gibbs,
Rogene Patterson, Jackie Alsobrook, Eric Tate and William Neely. Absent
were Jean Gibson and Frances Ellis. Library Director Beverly Ann Lewis
and Friends President Claire Haslam also attended.
The March 15, 1989, Minutes were approved as circulated.
Ms. Lewis presented the Budget Report which is on target through the
first six months of this fiscal year. Personnel costs are kept lower by
use of a Green Thumb worker. (Green Thumb is a Federally funded program
which sponsors older workers free of charge to qualifying agencies.)
The Statistical Report noted an increased total circulation of 8,690
items over the same period last year. Reference transactions have
increased for both juvenile and adult patrons.
Of the 174 March new adult titles, 63 were added as the result of
memorial contributions. The selection focus will be on fiction titles in
the next two months.
Mrs. Shelton asked about the number of books the Library looses. Ms.
Lewis stated approximately 1,500 are officially checked out and recorded
as overdue. However, until an inventory of the collection is taken, it
isn't possible to determine how many items are missing.
The Display Committee will set up a display of Coca Cola memorabilia
and related books for the first half of the summer.
The Jerry Bywaters archivist at SMU will send all pertinent
information about the four paintings in the Library. Appropriate
notations will be put on plaques which will be placed next to each
painting.
Mrs. Haslam reported the recent book review was very successful and
the people at Holy Cross Church were very cooperative. Unofficial count
on ticket sales was 108.
Ms. Lewis discussed Library participation at the upcoming YWCA Art
Fair. She advised a staff member will be a strolling sandwich board
advertiser which will promote reading and summer youth activities. Julie
Yerby will wear the sandwich board and will also stamp children's hands
with the special summer reading stamp.
Ms. Lewis proposed the Library obtain a concrete and brick bench to
place under the oak tree near the main entrance sign. An initial estimate
on one which would match the new sign was $600. Other bids would be
solicited. She advised Bond money would be used if available; if not,
foundation funds could be used. Virginia Gibbs moved to do this and
Rogene Patterson seconded the motion. It was approved by the Board.
