The Director's remarks included the following:
Collection Development includes comparing authoritative lists of
recommended books against the library's own collection. She noted our
Library owns all of the recently announced Pulitzer Prize winning titles.
Also, we own 13 of the 15 fiction titles from the American Library
Association's "Notable Books" List and 8 of the 11 non - fiction titles.
The New York Times Book Review Best Seller lists are posted weekly and we
have consistently owned more than ninety -five percent of those titles.
Ms. Lewis attended the Texas Library Association's annual conference
in Houston last week and she gave each Board member a written report about
it. She also gave a brief summery today and noted resource sharing and
automation standards would be of major concern for Librarians in the near
future.
Beginning in May, the library staff will begin the "Read, Weed, and
Smile" project. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the entire
collection and to withdraw any items whose physical condition does not
justify their existance on the shelves. The result will be a collection
which is more appealing, more useful and ready for tagging when the
detection system is installed. Ms. Lewis added she will be visiting area
libraries in May to evaluate various detection systems in preparation for
a June recommendation to the Board.
Chairman Hagood reminded Board members about providing suggestions
for nominees for the City Council to consider for filling the upcoming
three vacancies on the Board.
The meeting adjourned at 5:05 P.M.
-------------------------- - - - - -- -----------------------------------
Date Approved William Neely, Acting Secretary
