MINUTES
PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
November 19, 1986
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met November 19, 1986 at 4:00 P.M.
in the City Hall Annex with Virginia Gibbs, Chairman, presiding. Present were
Don Black, Bill Hagood, Robert Pierson, Reeves Hayter, Rogene Patterson, Jackie
Alsobrook, Beth Shelton and Frances Ellis, Secretary. Also attending were
Dick Boots, Director of Community Facilities for the City of Paris, Roslyn
Sample, Assistant Librarian, William Lightfoot, Architect for the Library
Expansion and Sue Smith of Main Street Project.
Minutes of the September 17 meeting were approved as circulated.
A letter of thanks was read by Mrs. Gibbs for the flowers sent to
Tiana Williams while she was in the hospital.
Mr. William Lightfoot reported on the progress of the Library Expansion
Project. Eight days were added to the project time schedule due to poor
weather. The landscaping and furnishings would be the next item of concern
for Library Board Members. Some drainage problems were discussed. Approxi-
mately $3000 would have to be spent on constructing additional retaining walls
on the south side of the Library Project. Mr. Lightfoot spoke briefly on the
cistern that was found at the northwest corner of the existing building. He
also reported that a security system would be discussed at a later date.
The Mural Committee with Hayter and Black said they would check with
Cathy Swaim about the contract and the subject of the mural for the Library,
and that the Board would be given opportunity to approve or disapprove. The
mural is part of the Endowment for the Arts grant for which the Library will
have to match funds of approximately $3,500.
Boots said the two portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Culbertson have been wrapped
and placed in the Aiken Archives at Paris Junior College. Since they are worth
about $20,000 each, they will be insured and later cleaned and restored for
placing in the new library building.
He discussed the need of training staff to use the computer given the
Library by NETLS and a discussion of where the $1500 would come from needed
for further research. Mrs. Alsobrook said she would check with NETLS for
she thought there was a staff member who was supposed to help train Librarians
to use the computers.
Mrs. Sample said the Library is getting from 30 to 40 memorial books a
month now, but use of any left over money from the memorials was discussed and
not thought wise to use for staff training.
Members looked at the October financial report from the City for the
Library and discussed the Christmas board meeting to be held at the home of
Chairman Gibbs on December 17, 1986, at 4:00 P.M.
The meeting adjourned at 5:00 P.M.
Date approved
Frances Ellis, Secretary
