MINUTES OF THIRD ANN(,A MEETING OF THE <br />ADVISORY BOARD FOR THE PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY JULY 13, 1978 <br />'The Advisory Board for the Paris Public Library had the third <br />annual meting,, July 139 1978 with dinner at the Gordon Country Club <br />at 7 p.m. with at Bassano Chairman, presiding. Special guests were <br />City Council members including Mr. and Mrs. Dave Philley Mr. and Mrs. <br />Walter Williams, Mr. and Mrs. George Fisher with Mayor Mike Malone, <br />City Manager Mr. Bob Sokoll and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Greene. <br />Board members included Mr. and Mrs. Bassano, Mr. and Mrs. David <br />Denney Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Gibbs, Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Mallory, and <br />Mr. and 1,irs. Printis Ellis. <br />Staff present included Yohra Hastin s, Mrs. Margaret Baker, Mrs. <br />Lois Finch, Mrs. Helen Gies, Mrs. Jerry Joy) Wade and husband; Mrs. <br />Michael (Vicki) McHam and husband, Louise Crittenden, Beverly Wells, and <br />wife of the Custodian Mrs. dames (Rosie) Bradford. <br />Mr.'Fred Haley, organist with St. Luke's Methodist Church in Oklahoma <br />City, was a guest of Mr. Hastings, and played dinner music. <br />Mr. Denney gave the invocation. Mr. Mallory introduced guests. <br />Mr. Bassano reviewed accomplishments of the year saying the Library had <br />become a department of the City in August of 1977, and Mr. Hastings had <br />been hired as Directory of Library Services in April of 1978. In July <br />the Library hours were extended to 45 a week. "The Board commends the <br />City Council for approving an operating budget for the Library which can <br />update its features and services for 1978- 19799" he said. He read a letter <br />from Mr. Louis Williams suggesting the Library consider some long range <br />work together with Paris Junior College's new Learning Resources Center, <br />and said a meeting at the College would be held soon. <br />He said the Advisory Board had accep-ted:: the recommended Policy on <br />book selections by Mr. Hastings, and would present these to the City <br />Council for later approval. <br />He announced approval of re- appointment to the Advisory Board of <br />Dr. Don Black and Mrs. Printis Ellis, explaining the new system of three <br />year terms, and a maximum of two terms. <br />He introduced Mr. Hastings giving his professional background, and <br />Mr. Hastings gave the statistical report for the year saying 1300 new books <br />had been added; a total of 31,500 books onthe shelves with 85,055 circulated <br />during theyear, with an average of 1635 a week; three - fourths were fiction <br />and 5282 requests for information or guidance. <br />Mr. Hastings explained the purpose of the Library - to enrich, refine <br />tastes and create informed citizens with mature judgment. Quoting Socrates, <br />he said "Society is only as good as the pe 'ople who live in it." He told of <br />the T xas Library 4,etem, and the Loan service with new film catalogs for <br />16 mm. projector which he hoped the Library would obtain, and cassettes to <br />be made available. He announced Gover or Br�scoe's September 12 Town Hall <br />Meeting Day in every community with : 197 meeting in Austin. <br />Mr. Greene expressed appreciation for the Council for the dinner and <br />business session. meeting adjourned at 9 p.m. <br />7X, Mrs .
