PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES OF MEETING 2/21/79, 10:00 a- m. Present were Chairman Pa,t Ba,ssa,no and members David Denny, Virginia, Gibbs, Don Bla,ck, and Jackie Alsobrook. Also present wa.s Librarian John Hastings. Children's Librarian Lois Finch a,ttended part of the meeting in order to give a, report. John Hastings reported that City Manager Robert Sokoll and Finance Director Harold Greene discussed the budget request, previously approved by the Library Board, with him. He reported that they a,sked him several questions, that he had emphasized the importance of the materials budget and the telephone system, and that they seemed receptive. The city officials did not indica,te in this meeting which items might or might•not be approved but did advise Mr. Hastings tha,t he might be a,sked to answer questions a,t the budget workshop of the city council. Next, John Hastings reported th-t the loss of $170,000 from the Texas State budget for library development would mean that $3,100,000.00 would be lost from the U.S. office of Education next year, cutting the Texas Library System program in half. He passed out explanatory literature and urged the members of the Board to write to thier state represeta.tives, a,s he is urging other citizens of Paris to do. The question of moving the DAR materials from the Paris Public Library to either the Mike Rheuda,sil Learning Center or to the State Regional Archives housed in the same building,wa,s discussed. The advantage wa.s stated a,s a, better facility for genealogy materials and researchers. The possible disa,dvatage was stated a,s loss of prestige and support from the members of the DAR. Dr. Don Black commented that if the proposal were made in the proper spirit, pointing out the advantage to their interests, the DAR members would be delighted with it. David Denny informed the Board that the archives are a, Texas State fa,cility housed in the same building with the college learning center. The state requirements for the building are exacting. Furthermore, the state will hire a, professional archivist beginning September 1. The Board unanimously agreed that the possibility of a, move should be explored with the Paris Junior Ceollege officials and with the DAR. John Hastings wa.s charged with proceeding with the exploration.
