also reported that they discussed the advantages of starting a Friends of the
Library organization in Paris. Mrs. Crabb pointed out that the Friends of the
Marshall Public Library had actually built the building. David Denney said that
Paris Public Library had been built at the urging of a Friends group. Mrs.
Alsobrook showed the Board a statistical chart that she has compiled which
shows that Paris Public has one of the best cost to circulation ratios in the
area. These figures can be used to demonstrate the necessity of more funding
for the library and the effectiveness of money allocated to the library.
Coming back to the topic of County support for the library, Mrs. Alsobrook
recommended that this goal be set aside for the present, as the amount realis-
tically to be expected could not justify the loss of aid the library would
sustain if dropped from NETLS membership.
Next, the discussion turned to the purchase of a certificate of deposit for the
S.W. Wilbor Fund. Mr. Bassano recommended buying a CD which would balance the
opportunity for high interest against the risk of losing part of the principal
if the money should have to be withdrawn -- a four year certificate, perhaps.
Mr. Denney inquired about the other CD's the fund contained. No one had cur-
rent information on the status of these. It was further pointed out that there
are perhaps better investment possibilities than the purchase of a CD. It
was decided that the entire situation would be reviewed before further action
is taken.
John Hastings reported that he had called Mrs. Hendren, Regent of the Paris
D.A.R. She told him that she had just returned from a month -long trip and
had read his letter and the letter from Dorothy Thielman of Paris Junior College
just the evening before. She said that she is going out of office as Regent
and that a Mrs. Dixon is assuming the office. The information was to be passed
on to Mrs. Dixon. However, because the D.A.R. will not meet again until October,
no action can be taken until then. Mrs. Dixon was to meet with Hastings in the
near future. Mrs. Hendren reported that the main opposition to the move would
come from members in their 70's and 80's.
Mrs. Alsobrook reported that Elizabeth Crabb had reminded her that a dedication
ceremony will take place in the autumn for the new Regional Archives at PJC.
The Board decided that the possibilities will be'explored for public library
participation in this event in order to make the needs of public libraries
more apparent to state -level public officials who will attend.
The meeting adjourned at 11:15 a.m.
John P. Hastings
Temporary Acting Secretary.
Members of the Board are requested to report to me any facts that I have
recorded inaccurately or omitted. Thank you.
1 '
