PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
MINUTES
April 28, 1993
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in delayed session
Wednesday, April 28, 1993, at 4 PM in the Library Gallery with
these members present: Chairman, Bill Neely, Jackie Alsobrook,
Virginia Gibbs, Bill Hagood, Rogene Patterson, and Joe Rex. Absent
were Frances Ellis, Jean Gibson and Beth Shelton. Library Director
Beverly Lewis and NETLS Lay Representative Thomas Seay attended.
The March 24, 1993, Minutes were approved as distributed.
The budget report was given by Ms. Lewis and indicates expenditures
of 49.87% for the first six months of this fiscal year.
The statistical report indicated a 3.8% increase in the March
circulation this year over the previous year. However, year to
date circulation is down 3 %. Ms. Lewis noted that because of the
nearly fifty percent cut in the materials budget, there aren't as
many new titles available, and consequently circulation has
dropped. Large print materials more than doubled their circulation
in March this year over last year which indicates the success of
intershelving them with regular format materials.
During March, 293 new adult titles were added; 357 new juvenile
titles; and 112 new videos.
Bill Hagood reported for the automation committee and advised new
price information would be provided by the NETLS Automation
Consultant soon. He also said an invitation was received from the
McKinney Public Library Director to visit and study their automated
system. All Board members agreed it would be advantageous to begin
the automation process as soon as possible, even completing it in
stages if necessary. Ms. Lewis advised that data input of patron
records continues.
Jackie Alsobrook reported for the county funding committee and
distributed a resolution (copy attached) stating the Board's
position in a tactful, firm and positive manner. Virginia Gibbs
moved, and Bill Hagood seconded, to accept the statement; the
motion passed unanimously. Each Board member will sign the
original and it will be sent to the City Manager.
Ms. Lewis advised the Library will host the NETLS workshop about
"Confidentiality of Patron Records" Tuesday, May 4. Judith Krug,
Director, Office for Intellectual Freedom, American Library
Association, will be the main speaker. Bill Hagood moved, and Joe
Rex seconded, that the Board fund refreshments up to $50; the
motion passed unanimously.
