PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
MINUTES
September 15, 1993
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session, September 15, 1993, at 4 PM in
the Library Gallery with Chairman Beth Shelton, presiding, and these members present: Virginia
Gibbs, Jean Gibson, Bill Hagood, Rogene Patterson, Joe Rex, and Frances Ellis, Secretary.
Beverly Lewis, Library Director, and Thomas Seay, NETLS Lay Representative, were present.
Absent were Jackie Alsobrook, BIll Neely, and Friends President Keitt Wood.
Minutes of the August 18, 1993, meeting were approved as circulated.
Ms. Lewis gave the budget report saying expenditures were in line and the budget year almost at an
end. She gave the statistical report saying the circulation was 2.2% behind August of 1992, mostly
because of the 45% cut in the budget for materials. She explained that her acquisition plan was
modified to include more audio books and more large prints, both of which were increasing in
circulation. Members agreed the Library has done well in keeping up with new books in
comparison with other libraries, even the one in Austin. She said 250 new adult books, 85
children's books, and 44 videos were accessioned in August.
She said the City Council was still considering the budget for fiscal year 1993 -1994 and that the
Library portion was still intact with the $25,000 for automation included. September 26 will be
the final decision day for the budget.
She reported on county funding, noting the committee had been meeting weekly, and at the
September 14 meeting, the "contract method" for the County to participate in the funding and
budgeting process was discussed. Also discussed was the issue of participation on the Advisory
Board.
She explained one automation system vendor, Dynix, would be at the Library October 27 to
provide a demonstration, and the Board was invited to attend it at 1 PM. She also explained that
reassigning staff members to handle automation responsibilities would be done soon.
The fall preschool children's programs were announced: 10 AM Tuesdays will be a new program
"Books and Babies" when nursery rhymes would be featured and parents helped to find books for
their children. Wednesday would continue to be the storytime for two- year -olds at 10 AM; and
Thursday and Friday at 10 AM would be the storytimes for three- and - four - year -olds. The focus of
the 7 PM Tuesday programs would be family storytelling. On Saturdays at 2 PM, a family movie
program will feature movies taken from recommended classic and contemporary juvenile books.
Ms. Lewis reported for the Friends explaining the book review luncheon would be October 29 and
there are only twenty seats still available.
The meeting adjourned at 4:45 PM.
Date Approved Frances A. Ellis, Secretary
