PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
OCTOBER 20, 1993
MINUTES
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session October 20, 1993, at 4 PM in the
Library Gallery with Chairman Beth Shelton presiding and these members present: Virginia Gibbs,
Jean Gibson, Bill Hagood, Rogene Patterson, Joe Rex, and Frances A. Ellis, Secretary. Absent
were Jackie Alsobrook and Bill Neely. Library Director, Beverly Lewis, NETLS Lay
Representative Thomas Seay, and Friends President Keitt Wood were present.
Minutes of the September 15, 1993, meeting were approved as circulated.
The budget report was not available from the City Finance office. Ms. Lewis said she felt the
Department would finish the fiscal year under budget.
Ms. Lewis discussed the statistical report and noted 190,938 items circulated in FY 92 -93. That
was a small decrease of 1.8% in circulation compared to last year, but she said this was actually
pretty good, considering the 45% cut in the materials budget. Other important statistics included:
106,791 persons visited the Library; the librarians provided reference assistance and reader's
advisory service 39,621 times; there were 321 interlibrary loans and 2,313 reserve requests. The
Dial -a -Story telephone rang 32,205 times, and there were 275 programs. There are 36,043
cardholders, having gained 2,351.
The accessions report indicated 4,200 titles were added last year, which was 2,500 less than during
the previous year. In September, acquisitions included 200 books, 55 videos, and 14 audio
cassettes.
Ms. Lewis reported the City approved the $498,255 FY 93 -94 budget proposal she submitted. She
also advised she did not receive a raise; except the 3% cost of living raise that all city employees
received.
The automation report included information about the City approval of $25,000 in the library
budget for automation. With $75,000 from the bond money and $25,000 from Board funds it will
be possible to procede with automation. Ms. Lewis reminded the Board that the automation
consultant from Dynix will be here next Wednesday at 1 PM to give a demonstration of the online
catalog and circulation modules.
Ms. Lewis reported the county funding committee continues to meet and progress is being made in
developing a contract.
Ms. Lewis announced the following staff changes which were made to achieve better service to
patrons and more efficiency in technical processing: Faye Townsdin has been assigned to the
children's department where she will provide reference assistance, reader's advisory service, and
conduct the preschool storytimes. Pamela Sidness has been assigned to technical processing where
she will perform technical processing duties. Also, Val Stankus has been promoted to System
Manager and will work with the Director in implementing the automation system.
