Member present were: Virginia
Gibbs, Jean Gibson, Beth Shelton and Frances Ellis, Secretary.
Library Director Beverly Lewis Campbell and Claire Haslam,
President of the Friends of the Library also attended. Board
members Jackie Alsobrook, William Neely, Rogene Patterson and
Eric Tate were absent.
Minutes of the June 21 meeting were approved as circulated.
Mrs. Campbell presented the Budget report, noting the
Department has expended 71.8 percent of its total budget for
the year. She said approximately $43,000 has been spent on
books to date.
She said the monthly circulation was down somewhat from June of
1988, probably due to a different incentive plan for the
children's summer reading club. However, total circulation to
date is up 14 percent from a year ago. Thirteen youth programs
this summer have included 512 young readers.
June accessions included 131 adult fiction titles and all of
the L'Amour books are in. Titles in the following categories
were also added: 92 adult non - fiction, 116 juvenile fiction, 61
juvenile non - fiction, and 38 videos.
Mrs. Gibbs reported for the nominating committee and the
following officers were elected: Bill Hagood, Chairman; William
Neely, Vice - Chairman; and Frances Ellis, Secretary.
Mrs. Campbell reported she previewed the best overall system
for a Detection System at the American Library Association
conference recently and discussed it with representatives from
the Knogo Library Assurance Corporation. A Knogo sales
technician visited the Library, demonstrated the sensitizing
and desensitizing capabilities, evaluated layout options, and
presented a bid for the entire system.
The Knogo system includes portable sensitizers, uses nearly
invisible magnetic strips, will not false alarm and is safe
near computers and for those with medical implants, etc.
The approximately $11,000 system is substantially less
expensive than others on the market. Board members approved
the Knogo system. However, Mrs. Campbell noted the City
Attorney advised obtaining bids.
Mrs. Gibbs moved Thomas Seay be the NETLS Alternate Lay
Reprsentative; motion seconded and passed.
Mrs. Campbell reported the Library still has dozens of Library
Commemorative plates on hand and members agreed they should be
promoted for sale at the reduced price of $5 each.
