MINUTES
PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD
August 15, 1990
The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular
session, August 15, 1990, at 4 P.M. in the Gallery with
Virginia Gibbs, Chairman, presiding. Present were Jean
Gibson, Bill Hagood, Rogene Patterson, and Frances Ellis,
Secretary. Beverly Lewis, Library Director, attended.
Absent were Jackie Alsobrook, Bill Neely, Beth Shelton,
and Eric Tate. Delores Hayter, President of the Friends
of the Library, was present.
The Minutes of the July 18, 1990, meeting were approved as
circulated.
The Director discussed the City Budget Report, noting the
facility maintenance and supplies accounts were still
over, but not as much as in July.
She reported an increase of circulation for July to 16,450
over 13,152 in 1989. Total circulation for the year is
up: 126,532 compared to 105,900 last year. Evening
circulation increases each month with 955 for the nine
evenings in July. She reported 1,566 books were removed
from the shelves so far this year because of outdatedness
or poor physical condition, noting some are destroyed and
others placed in the book sale area.
She said few books are being ordered but many are still
coming in from previous orders. The following additions
to the collection were made in July: 52 adult fiction,
128 adult non - fiction, 108 juvenile fiction, and 37
juvenile non - fiction. Some multiple copies to meet best
sellers demand are reflected in those numbers. No new
videos were processed.
She reported 139 children completed the Summer Reading
Club and earned the Certificate of Achievement. 1,574
attended the 17 programs, with more than 100 in several of
the activities held in the Gallery. She noted increasing
interest in the new juvenile series books.
She said the August 15 Paris News listed the 139 names of
the children receiving Certificates and she had written
the publisher and editor to thank their staff for the
excellent publicity of the entire Summer Reading Club.
Mrs. Hayter moved the Board send a letter of thanks to the
Paris News , motion seconded, discussed and passed and the
Secretary was asked to do this over the Chairman's name.
