PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD AUGUST 21, 1996 MINUTES The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session Wednesday, August 21, 1996, in the Gallery at 4:00 PM with Chairman Beth Shelton presiding and these members present: Jackie Alsobrook, Virginia Gibbs, Rogene Patterson, Joe Rex, Keitt Wood; and Frances Ellis, Secretary. Beverly Lewis, Library Director was present; and Kathie Gibbs, Friends President was present. Absent were Toni Donnan and Ralph Rodgers. The July 17, 1996 Minutes were approved as distributed. The Budget Report was distributed and Ms. Lewis noted expenditures were in line for this time of the fiscal year. She also advised that the 1996 -1997 Budget Request had been discussed with the City Manager. No new personnel requests were left in the Budget and there might have to be more cuts made. $5,000 was cut from the Budget which had been allocated to purchase a video diagnostics machine. After discussion, Ms. Lewis agreed to bring a report on the Money Market Account to the Board so a decision could be made about purchasing this needed item. The Statistical Report indicated the July circulation this year was 21.8% higher than the same month last year with 26,107 items circulated. She said the overall year to date circulation is 24.1% higher than last year because 1216,080 items have been checked out. Ms. Lewis advised 829 items have been added to the collection: 641 books, 89 audio books, and 99 videos. Reporting for Children's Librarian, Emily Kirkman, Ms. Lewis said the 1996 Summer Reading Club was more successful than in several years with 1,748 total attendance. The number of kids who read, told about the book, and won an instant prize increased significantly: 380 this year compared to 280 last summer. The Board reviewed the proposed By -Laws and made several minor changes. The revised copy will be distributed with the August Minutes and discussion about the By -Laws will take place at the September meeting. - continued-
