PARIS PUBLIC LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD <br />AUGUST 20, 1997 <br />lu1161iI11i <br />The Paris Public Library Advisory Board met in regular session Wednesday, August 20, 1997, at <br />4 PM in the Gallery with Beth Shelton, Chairman, presiding, and these members present: Jackie <br />Alsobrook, Toni Donnan, Virginia Gibbs, John Howison, Keitt Wood, and Secretary, Frances <br />Ellis. Catharine Browning, Friends President, and Beverly Lewis, Library Director, were <br />present. Absent were Rogene Patterson and Ralph Rodgers. <br />The July 16, 1997, Minutes were approved as distributed. <br />Ms. Lewis distributed the Budget Report and advised expenditures were on target to date. She <br />noted she had not yet had a discussion with the City Manager about the "97 -'98 Budget Request. <br />The Statistical Report was distributed. Ms. Lewis pointed out that July was busier by 5.6% that <br />last year and 27,563 items circulated. The year to date increase is 15% and 248,598 items have <br />been checked out. <br />In July, 711 items were added to the collection, including 86 new audio books. <br />Upon motion by Virginia Gibbs, second by Toni Donnan, the following new officers were <br />unanimously elected; Chairman, Keitt Wood; Vice Chairman, John Howison; and Secretary, <br />Frances Ellis. <br />Ms. Lewis reported the Summer Reading Club was very successful again. 903 kids in grades K <br />through 6 attended the programs in the Gallery and 212 adults accompanied them. There were <br />296 preschoolers who attended the storytime programs in the Children's Room and 164 adults <br />participated with them. 237 kids received raffle prizes as part of the "Read, Spin and Tell" <br />program. <br />The Family Literacy Outreach Services Project concluded August 1 and Ms. Lewis reported 800 <br />kids and 260 adults participated and they represented approximately 61 families. 66% of the kids <br />participating completed their personal Reading Logs and Ms. Lewis advised this was a <br />benchmark of success for the entire project. <br />Children's programs will begin again the first week in September and will include storyimes on <br />Thursday and Friday mornings for 3, 4, and 5 year olds; and a book related program for kids in <br />grades K -6 on Thursday afternoons. In mid October, storytimes for babies and toddlers will <br />begin and pre- registration is required for those six -week programs. <br />
