I have seen very few improvement made by the City. For instance,
our street was repaved about seven years ago and was still in
very good condition. Last year the street department dumped
what I presume to be excess oil on our street from another job,
which didn't cover the entire street. It was never properly
smoothed out. After a petition and numerous complaints, the
street department finally brought out gravel which didn't resolve
the problem. Our street now has built in speed bumps. There
are more bumps and waves on our street than in a bag of wavy
potato chips. I am certainly in favor of using the excess oil
and not wasting it, but it should have been spread properly.
The City does not maintain the alley behind our property unless
we complain. It was mowed once this year and I was told the
City would do nothing about the poison oak which is all over
the ground. The alley was never mowed in 1994, although I
reported several times that some weeds were almost touching
power lines. I mow behind my property at no cost to the City.
I asked them to smooth out or fill in the ruts they left while
repairing the sewer line several months ago. To date nothing
has been done. I do not intend to tear up my mower trying to
mow this area due to the City's neglect.
There is no emergency siren in our neighborhood. The nearest
one is on Jefferson Road and is entirely to small to be heard
during storms. The few times this siren has been sounded it
is so faint you are not sure if it is the siren or your
imagination.
We pay for sanitation services on a biweekly basis regardless
of whether it is picked up or not. Why should we pay for service
on City holidays, some of which you take are not taken by other
companies, when the service in only provided once that week?
It is ridiculous that we have to call the police and bother
them with animal complaints because there is no animal control
officers available after 5 P.M. There are dogs running our
street every night and although there has been complaint after
complaint by numerous people nothing has been done. Some nights
you are lucky to get three hours sleep, because of the
neighborhood dogs barking at the dogs roaming the street. I
have even walked out my front door and stepped in dog excrement
on two different occasions.
I am also tired of hearing how Paris and Lamar County compare
our rates to Dallas to remain competitive. Paris is not Dallas
and Paris wages are certainly not comparable to Dallas wages.
Maybe the person or persons who feels we should compare
everything to Dallas should move to Dallas. If Paris wants
to be like Dallas, then why not pass an ordinance forbidding
farm animals on less than three acres inside the city limits.
If I were considering relocating to Paris, and looked at the
exorbitant water and sewer rates, I would have to relocate
