City Council Drainage Study Committee
July 31, 2000
Page 4
suggested putting some type of drainage down 191h SW or up on one of the other
streets to help control this drainage.
Evelyn Whitten, 540 31' SE, came forward telling the Committee that she thinks
that her house backs up to what is called Buttermilk Creek, which is a drainage
area off of Lamar Avenue, and she said that the creek has been out of its banks
many times since they have lived there. Mrs. Whitten said she did not think it
has hurt anyone's house but what concerns her is that it gets blocked up. She
said it is a matter of record with the City Street Department because they have
had to come and clear the blockage because the creek was completely blocked
with debris. Ms. Whitten said one time the debris was against a sewer pipe and
damaged the pipe and there was raw sewage in the creek.
City Manager Malone said that he thinks this is not Buttermilk Creek, but a
tributary that runs north and south which is west of 31" SE Street.
Chairman Plata advised the Committee that there were a couple of people that
could not attend the meeting and said he would present their drainage problems.
The first one was Billy Hilliard, 2191 W. Austin, and he stated that Mr. Hilliard
has water that stands in his backyard when it rains.
Chairman Plata said that the next one was Lucy Corprew,1622 West Houston,
and there is a ditch right below where she lives and it floods when it rains.
Chairman Plata said that the last person is Troy Jones, Jr., 609 West Sherman,
and reported that Mr. Jones has always taken care of the drainage ditch where
he lives, but now he can not do this because the concrete is busted up and he can
not mow it anymore.
Linda Caviness, 4240 Sunrise Drive, came forward advising the Committee that
the drainage ditch near Sunrise Street has six foot grass growing and it is a real
bad eyesore.
