For additional information, the state Fire Commission inspects this clothing twice a year. It has to continue to meet standards or it is pulled. It must be clean, free of rips and tears, have no reflective stripping torn or removed, and all buckles and snaps must work. We wash the clothing regularly, send it to a professional agency for cleaning and repair at least once a year, and otherwise try to preserve the clothing as much as possible. With the aggressiveness needed for the job however, the clothing is very worn in about five years. The need for this replacement program will be continuous. If we hire the three additional fire fighters for the fourth station, this will purchase two sets of protective equipment for each man.
