Mrs. Winona Warren spoke in fav -or of the proposal saying she had been involv6d with housing for twenty years and the need for more units is there. She cited insta.nces.where some residents utilities are higher than their rent. Gary O'Conner said that affordable housing offered by this opportunity should not be passed up. Clyde Thompson spoke for the petition saying it would help the economy of Paris. Leon Williams, 1020 N.E. 8th, said that citizens need to come together and provide for the needy. Chairman Swaim called for opponents to appear. Ralph Taylor, 2710 S.E. 3rd;'ask those in the audience to stand who were in.opposition to the project and approximately 100 people stood. He said he did not oppose the need but did oppose the site. He suggested the Housing Board consider a program -that would spread the units over 5'to 10 separate sites. Weldon Houchins, 2510 S.E. 3rd, -said his property would be devalued if the units were built there. Don McLaughlin, speaking for all but one of the adjacent land owners within 200 feet, outlined their objections saying that a housing project would have an adverse affect upon the adjacent Farm Bureau Office and their clients. He pointed out the participation of the Industrial Foundation in extension of water and sewer mains to serve the school and doubted that such participation would have been done if 4. they had known that a residential project would be proposed for this site instead of Industri.al.; He requested the Commission to not allow residential zoning to invade.the Industrial areas which greatly affect environmental considerations of prospective industries. Mike Folmar, 433 W.-Washington cited increase in crime in his neighborhood in the last few years since George Wright Homes was changed from primarily elderly residents,to primarily family units. He said previous hearings indicates the citizens of Paris do not want additional public housing. John Brooks, Superintendent of Chisum Schools,stated the School Board was opposed to the project because of its affect on the school. J.O. Creighton, President of.Chisum School Board.say the district would lose valuable industrial property and that in their opinion this was not a satisfactory site for.:housing .
