Survey Components - Part I
<br />The two major survey components for Paris listed and elaborated below
<br />were developed in accordance with guidelines developed by the Federal
<br />government for state historic plans and will provide the most useful and
<br />comprehensive survey and planning approach.
<br />1. Historical Analysis
<br />An essential aspect of a survey and planning study is a concise, yet
<br />thorough, analysis of the forces that shaped Paris and an account
<br />of the general development of the community, including not only
<br />its very early history but recent history as well. Beyond the usual
<br />political history of the community, the historical analysis, gathered
<br />through historical research in Paris and at the State level, will
<br />consider underlying themes which combined to give Paris its own
<br />individual character.
<br />2. The Inventory
<br />The inventory consists of information compiled on specific places
<br />relating to the general themes described in the Historical Analysis.
<br />A. Areas to be surveyed and inventoried:
<br />To help insure that all aspects of past development and all
<br />groups that participated,' are considered, the following types of
<br />structures and complexes will, be documented:
<br />Agricultural including barns,. farmhouses, sheds,,minor
<br />outbuildings, fences.
<br />Commercial including stores, office buildings,
<br />restaurants, taverns,. markets, warehouses, hotels, spas, utility
<br />company buildings.
<br />Educational including schools, academies, colleges, universities,
<br />museums, libraries, theaters, concert halls, opera houses.
<br />Governmental including courthouses, city halls, town halls,
<br />civic centers, jails, post offices, customs houses, firehouses,
<br />police stations, water systems.
<br />Industrial including mills, factories, foundries, furnaces,
<br />tanneries, watermills:
<br />Landscape architecture including commons, squares, parks,
<br />gardens, greens, cemeteries, gazebos, monuments', pavilions,
<br />fences, fountains, paving, and street furniture such as benches
<br />and street lights.
