computers, and now that the library's internet bandwidth is good enough,
people can use the WIFI instead of waiting in line for a computer.
Steve asked about the bandwidth capabilities for the Teen Space; more
bandwidth will bring in more teenage patrons. Ron stated that the city is
switching internet providers with a hotspot availability to come soon, but he's
not sure when that will take place exactly and how the city will limit the usage.
Steve asked if the city's new IT Director could come to a Library Advisory Board
meeting to discuss philosophies and priorities. Ron noted that it has been a year
since the library has had sufficient telephone access so it appears that the library
is on the bottom of the priority list. However, it is possible for the IT Director to
come to a future meeting. With nothing further to add, the board thanked Ron
for his many years of dedication to the library and its patrons and Ron went back
to his duties.
b. Reading Program Update:
i. 495 people signed up on the Summer Reading Program kickoff June 3rd
Also, 42 new people became library card holders, which is a rarity to have
42 people sign up in two weeks. With these positive statistics, Connie
says that the library will always have a Summer Reading kickoff.
ii. The capacity of the meeting room for normally scheduled performers is
pushing the limits. Connie wants to find a larger space but stay in the
library location. Currently, performers will be on the back deck, with lots
of shade. If the weather or other reasons arise that necessitate a move
indoors, a headcount will be kept for capacity concerns.
c. Programming:
i. In September, Storytime will be extended to 10:30, beginning on the first
Saturday. Connie would like to establish a Storytime in which leaders of
the community come to read to the children. Eva volunteered to come
dressed up and read to the children. DeEtte wanted to know who would
select the books and Connie responded, saying that the librarians usually
help select the reading options and if someone wants to choose their
own favorite, then it is screened first.
Working with the historic Maxey House, the library will offer the Maxey
Passport, which allows patrons to check out a free visit to the Maxey
House. The patrons can take their entire family with one passport and
will have two weeks to borrow it.
iii. Connie mentioned the library's July calendar to the board. All members
present remarked on how full the calendar was with activities for every
age group. The board agreed that Connie has done an excellent job
creating new and unique opportunities for people to visit and enjoy the
library.
d. Challenge Form:
