City Council Meeting April 9, 2001 Page 2 sufficient size to address this drainage problem after further investigation, and that it appeared that an enlargement of the present channel from Wade Park all the way south to Clark Lane would be necessary. He stated that when the engineer completed his assessment of need, then an estimate would be available of the total cost of the project. Mike Lane, 1342 Lamar Avenue, appeared before the Council, requesting that the City waive its park use fee for the 2001 Lake Crook drag boat races. Mr. Lane related that, following last year’s race, the financial turn out was not as anticipated and that he would not be financially involved in the promotion of the race, He stated that he would be working closely with the Race Association to figure out how they could come back with the race without a designated promoter. To do that, Mr. Lane and the Association felt it was necessary to ask the City to waive the weeke nd use fee of $1500.00 minimum and to waive the EMS Ambulanc e fee which is approximately $800.00 per day, depending on hours worked. The race is to be a two day event this year and Mr. Lane indicated that, if the city waived those fees, it would net the association about a $3100.00 savings. Mr. Lane indicated that the racers were going to race strictly for poin ts and that there would be no prize money awarded, so that the entry fee money would be retained by the association to pay for all the event financial obligations. Mr. Lane advised that the Association has agreed to reduce their sanction fee and that all the pe rsonnel normally paid have agreed to come in and work for free. Mr. Lane said the racers want to see this race happen and they need more time on the water to build a strong spectator base. They feel that when they accomplish that goal, then the sp onsorship and advertising revenue will start coming in to pay for the event. After dis cussion, a motion was made by Councilman Gray, seconded by Mayor Pro Tem Manning, to waive t he park use fee and EMS charges for the 2001 Lake Crook drag boat races. The motion carried 7 ayes, nays. Resolution No. 2001-038, approving the form of the Assignment from Mike Lane to the Southern Drag Board Association, Inc. of an Option Agreement th for the use of Lake Crook Park during the 4 of July weekend in the years 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 for the purpose of conducting drag boat racing, and authorizing and direc ting the City Manager to acknowledge approval, on behalf of the city of Paris, of the Assignment from Mike Lane to the Southern Drag Boat Association, Inc., was presented.
