The near
surface organically contaminated soils shall then be stripped from the site and
stockpiled for future use as topsoil. This material shall not be used in engineered fills.
Any soft or loose spots encountered during stripping operations shall be removed and
the resulting depression shall be backfilled in accordance with these recommendations.

B. After clearing and grubbing, the existing ground surface within the walkway areas shall
be proof rolled with a heavy consmaction equipment (20 tons, rubber wheeled). In
fill areas, the existing surface shall be proof rolled before filling and in cut areas,
proof rolled after excavating to finish grade. Soft pockets encountered shall be scarified
and re-compacted or removed and replaced with select on-site or borrow soils
compacted in thin lifts.

3.03 GRADING

A. The Contractor(s) shall at all times control the grading around building areas so that the
ground is adequately sloped to preclude the ponding of water adjacent to (within 30'
of any building) and beneath the structures and their foundations. Surface water
shall also be directed away from slopes.

B. Grading work shall be monitored by the Contractor(s) and periodic density tests
performed to verify that adequate compaction is consistentiyachieved.

C. All compacted pads not scheduled for immediate use shall be protected from long-
term erosion.

3.04 EXCAVATION

A. Foundation excavations will be inspected by the Engineer prior to the placement of the
concrete and steel to verify that the anticipated bearing materials have been
encountered. Any soft spots or boulders encountered during the foundation
excavation shall be removed and backfilled in accordance with the grading
recommendations. Steel reinforcement of the foundations shall be provided as
directed by the Project Structural Engineer.

B. Blasting as a means of excavation shall not be permitted. Mechanical excavation methods
will be limited due to the age of the building and the potential for damage to existing
systems and materials.

C. Excavated material shall be classified and disposed of as follows:

1. Usable materials such as clayey sand as approved by the Engineer shall be
stockpiled (for later use as fill material) in a location shown on Drawings or
designated by the Engineer. This material may also be excavated directly to
fill at the Contxactor's option.

2. Non-usable material such as adobe, mud and soft material shall become the property
of the Contractor(s) and shall be disposed of offsite in conformance with all
applicable laws and ordinances.

3.05 FILL AND BACKFILL

A. Areas designated to receive fill shall be scarified, moisture conditioned within three
percent of the optimum moisture content, and uniformly compacted to a minimum of
Section 02100
Page 34
