Fill shall be laid in loose lifts eight inches in thickness, moisture conditioned to within <br /> three percent of the optimum, and uniformly compacted to a minimum of 95 <br /> percent relative compaction as determined by the above-referenced test. Fills and <br /> backfills within pavement areas shall be compacted to at least 95 percent of maximum <br /> dry density within 2 feet of finished subgrade. <br /> <br /> C. Filling operations shall be performed so as to bring the walkway finished surfaces to the <br /> correct slopes as indicated on the Drawings. <br /> <br /> D. In general, fill and back:f'fll operations shall be carried out as follows: <br /> <br /> 1. Basement Foundation backfill shall be placed and compacted as specified or as directed <br /> by Structural Engineer. <br /> <br /> 2. Walkway backfill shall be placed and compacted as specified or as directed by S~'ueturai <br /> Engineer. <br /> <br /> 3. Trenching backfills shall be placed and compacted in accordance with the grading <br /> recommendations utilizing the appropriate mechanical compactor around <br /> and above the pipes. Jetting and ponding of the backfill shall not be allowed. <br /> <br /> E. The subgrade below the new walkways and ramps shall be maintained in a moist condition <br /> prior to slab placement to minimize any potential swelling or the subgrade soils. <br /> <br />3.06 INSUFFICIENT EARTH MATERIALS <br /> <br /> A. Contractor(s) shall import necessary materials without any additional cost to the Owner <br /> for smactural fill or yard fill to complete grading work. Such imported materials shall <br /> be subject to approval of Engineer and shall meet requirements as specified for each <br /> category of materials. <br /> <br />3.07 TOPSOIL AND FINISH GRADING <br /> <br /> A. Provision of a uniform 6 inch layer of imported topsoil around building including all <br /> areas other than AC paved or concrete slab areas shall be NIC. Topsoil shall be lightly <br /> compacted to provide a usable lawn or garden. <br /> <br />3.08 FILL TESTING <br /> <br /> A. All yard and structural fill, road subgrade and pavement section shall be tested by an <br /> independent testing agency and all test results submitted to the Engineer for <br /> approval. All cost of testing shall be borne by the Contractor(s). Testing shall be <br /> made throughout the area for each 6-inch compacted layer.
