Al1 tightly <br /> adhered coatings to remain. <br /> <br /> D. Do not paint over dirt, mst, scale, grease, moisture, scuffed surfaces, or conditions <br /> otherwise deU'imental to formation of a durable and aesthetically superior <br /> paint film. <br /> <br />3.02 SURFACE PREPARATION: <br /> <br /> A. General: Perform surface preparation as specified above for surface condition <br /> classification. Perform preparation and cleaning~ procedures in accordance with <br /> paint manufacturer's instructions and as here~n specified, for each particular <br /> substrate condition. <br /> <br /> 1. Remove hardware, hardware accessortes, machined surfaces, plates, lighting <br /> fixtures, and similar items in place and not to be finish-painted, <br /> or provide surface-applied protection prior to surface preparation <br /> and painting operations. Remove, if necessary, for complete painting <br /> of items and adjacent surfaces. Following completion of painting of <br /> each space or area, reinstall removed items. <br /> <br /> 2. Clean surfaces to be painted before applying p:tint or surface treatments. <br /> Remove oil and grease prior to sanding. Schedule and implement <br /> cleaning and painting so that contaminants fi'om cleaning process <br /> will not fall onto wet, newly-painted surfaces. <br /> <br /> 3. Clean wood surfaces to be painted of dirt, oil. or other foreign substances <br /> with scrapers, mineral spirits, and sandpaper, as required. <br /> <br /> B. Paint Removal: Execute paint removal as specified according to Surface Condition <br /> Classification above. <br /> <br /> 1. Paint removal shall be accomplished through thc gentlest means possible with <br /> no gouging, grinding or excessive removal of sound wood. Hand scraping, <br /> hand sanding and sanding by small hand-held mechanical oscillating <br /> sanders are the only means of paint removal acceptable. An3' request for use <br /> of alternate methods must be submitted in writing to t!~e Construction <br /> Manager 7 days prior to execution. Architect shall be the sole judge of <br /> acceptability of proposed alternates. <br /> <br /> 2.
