Special City Council Meeting <br />February 19, 2001 <br />Page 2 <br />appeared before the City Council stating that he was in support of the Sports <br />Complex. Mr. Vest said there is a great need for a multipurpose sports complex <br />and this would promote tourism in Paris. <br />Bill Sanders, representing the Breakfast Optimist Club, came forward telling the <br />City Council that the Breakfast Optimist Club would like to go on record in <br />support of a sports complex and additional recreational facilities that do not <br />duplicate facilities that are already available in Paris. Mr. Sanders said the club <br />will support in any way that it can, a sports complex and facilities that will serve <br />the needs of softball fields, soccer fields, a building that would house four <br />basketball courts, a second city swimming pool, tennis courts, roller blade <br />hockey courts, skateboard facilities, and a walking track. Mr. Sanders advised <br />that they continue to request the city to provide additional practice facilities for <br />baseball, softball, and soccer, and he recommended that the Lake Crook area <br />be considered for practice fields for those sports. Mr. Sanders reminded the <br />City Council that their club has been dedicated custodians of youth baseball in <br />Paris for more than 30 years. Mr. Sanders gave a history of the Paris Breakfast <br />Optimist Club and further stated that they do not support a sports complex that <br />includes baseball fields for the ages 5 through 14, which would be a duplication <br />of facilities that are available. <br />Richard Sharrock, Route 6, Paris, Texas, representing the Girls Softball League <br />came forward and stated that the teams in Paris do not have the opportunity to <br />host their tournaments because there are no facilities in Paris, Texas. Mr. <br />Sharrock said for the last two years they have gone to New Boston for their <br />tournaments. Mr. Sharrock said he had been coaching softball for 20 years and <br />has seen the sport grow. Mr. Sharrock said his oldest daughter plays softball <br />at Culbertson Park and they had to go to Wylie, Texas to play in their <br />tournament as there were no facilities available in Paris. He said that they have <br />a team that is number 65 in the nation. Mr. Sharrock said to help with the <br />facilities, he would let the city have fencing material for newfacilities at his cost. <br />Nancy Brannon, 1849 Lamar, appeared before the City Council speaking for <br />Representative Mark Homer, who also supports a sport complex in Paris to <br />attract more business and industry. Ms. Brannon stated that Representative <br />Homer extended his help in anything that he might do to help in securing the <br />complex. <br />Sam Morrone, 3025 Oak Creek, came forward calling attention to a handout <br />called "America's Greatest Fund Raiser." Mr. Morrone said a Sports Complex <br />for one weekend with 30 teams entering a tournament at a cost of $250.00 per <br />team would bring in revenue of more than $7,500.00.
