He said there would be a cost of $3,000.00 for umpires and
trophies for a total profit in the area of $11,000.00, and further pointed out that
if you had ten teams you would double that figure. Mr. Morrone also pointed out
that the people coming into the City of Paris would spend additional money
shopping, motels, and food. Mr. Morrone stated that this would be a big
opportunity for the city.
Henry Shaw, 1550 N. E. First Street, Director of the Boys and Girls Club, came
forward stating that as a director of a youth facility, he was in favor of the sports
complex. Mr. Shaw said it should be maintained for nonprofit organizations. He
said that their facility was built in 1952 and is now too small for the present
number of kids. Mr. Shaw told the City Council that the more recreational
activities that are available for our youth, the better our community will be.
Vernon Carter, 2200 E. Jackson Street, was present stating that he is the softball
coach for Paris Junior College, and was in favor of the sports complex. He said
it would accommodate growing youth recreation, which would lead to improved
programs, skills and enlarge the opportunities for scholarships for college age
kids.
Terry Anderson, 2217 Cleveland, came forward advising that he was a softball
coach and spoke in favor of the sports complex. Mr. Anderson said this would
give a larger range of kids an opportunity to participate in all types of sports.
Derrell Bulls, 2217 Cleveland, came forward stating that he represented the
YWCA and the Paris Visitors and Convention Council. Mr. Bulls said he is a
coach for the young ladies and they have more than 300 girls playing on two
fields at Culbertson Park and they have no way of hosting a tournament. Mr.
Bulls pointed out that a sixteen-team tournament held in Paris over one weekend
would generate $324,000.00 in revenue. Mr. Bulls encouraged the City Council
to take the sports complex under consideration.
Joe Bob Margraves, Route 6, Box 1420, appeared before the City Council as a
concerned citizen, and stated that as someone who has been involved in youth
sports in Paris for a number of years, he recognizes that it is long past due to
improve the parks in Paris. Mr. Margraves said he was currently involved with
the girl's fast pitch softball. Mr. Margraves said they travel and have had the
opportunity to play in cities that have set a priority on having quality facilities
within their parks and recreation departments forthe youth in their communities.
He advised that his team has had to pass in the past to host tournaments
because of lack of adequate facilities, and pointed out the amount of lost
