Special City Council Meeting
February 13, 2001
Page 2
patrolled by whatever law enforcement that is available. Mr. Parr said there
is a need for a well-maintained road at Lake Crook. The improvements have
helped, but it needs to continue to get better. He felt that Paris has started
the right way to get interest established in Lake Crook and he would like to
see it continued with more expanded, maintained places where children and
adults can go and have picnics, more fishing areas, along with piers and
docks built for people to fish off of.
Gary Vest, 1651 Clarksville Street, Paris, Texas, representing the Lamar
County Chamber of Commerce, appeared before the City Council and read
a position paper of the Chamber of Commerce in regard to Lake Crook:
"The Chamberwould like to see a comprehensive evaluation and feasibility
study of possible development options for Lake Crook. The Chamberwould
like to see a study of the long-term financial impact of development and non-
development of the Lake Crook area. The Chamber would like to see the
existing sixty two acre public park maintained and enhanced forthe citizens
of Paris. The Chamber supports and endorses the maintenance of the rifle
range, the skeet and trap shooting facilities, and the radio controlled model
aircraftfacilities. The Chamber wholeheartedly supports and encourages the
investigation of potential sources of increased property tax revenue and
sales tax revenue."
Steve Pearson, 4901 Wolf Creek, came forward stating that he represents the
Lake Crook Sportsmans Association. Mr. Pearson said the suggestions that
they have for the development and improvement for the existing park area
is on the south and the east side and they feel security gates such as the
type used at Pat Mayse Lake would be an improvement. They would like to
see and promote walking trails, either paved or gravel, and bike trails. He
said they see a need for a nature observation station, and would like more
fishing piers, both covered and uncovered with a large deck area, volleyball
courts, barbecue pits, and picnic tables on concrete pads. Mr. Pearson said
they see for the north and west side of the lake a combination of walking,
bike, and horse trails, either paved or gravel on the existing sandy road.
Also, they would like to see some nature observation stations. Mr. Pearson
said they would like to see the north and west side of the lake in a natural
state, but would continue to support the growth of the existing outdoor
sportsman's clubs and reinstate past lease agreements. He said theywould
like to see parking areas on both ends of the road along the north and west
side of the lake as there is no place to park. They would also like to see a
secured and primitive area on the north side of the lake that could be used
for cub scouts, boy scouts, church groups and other organizations.
