City Council Meeting
December 11, 2000
Page 10
the burning of CD's so that when the council members attend council
meetings with their laptops they will be able to put in the CD and go through
the agenda packet. She explained that this is needed because at this time the
city does not have internet capabilities or links at this location. Ms. Wright
also explained that there will be a$1,510.00 annual cost for support. There will
also be the cost for ten laptop computers with cable modem connections and
net cards, so when the city has a council chambers where they will have
access to a server or the internet, and that cost will be $2,586.00 a piece. Ms.
Wright further explained that there are two methods of internet connections
depending on whether you are in a location that Cox Internet serves. If you
can get Cox Cable, you can get Cox Internet Express, which is a much faster
plan and more expensive plan. You will get a free connection plus the first
free month of service; however, they said to call back after the first month and
switch down to the slower service and the cost will only be $24.95 a month,
and that is what they recommended that the city do, if the city goes with Cox
Internet Service. Ms. Wright said there is also the possibility of a telephone
internet connection through StarNet, which the city uses, the cost for adding
an additional phone would be $75.00 for installation and a monthly charge of
$25.84. Ms. Wright explained that if the city does not have someone to host
the website, if it is recommended that we host our own website, there will be
a potential purchase of another server at an approximate cost of $10,890.00
and the fire wall to protect from unwanted visitors at a cost of approximately
$2,000.00; however, StarNet has said that they will do whatever they could do
to help the city out in this process and that the size would not be an issue for
them regarding space on the server.
Ms. Wright said it was recommended that the LaserFiche System be in place
before the city does anything else because the other is so labor intensive. Ms.
Wrightsaid the Committee recommends that DynaSource, who is the company
that the City is purchasing the LaserFiche from, come down and meet with
StarNet and review the city's current setup and make a recommendation as to
what the city needs to do in regard to the web hosting. Ms. Wright explained
that the city does not want to have a web server at the city because it could
open the city up to potential problems, but with StarNet hosting the website,
it will shield the city from anyone getting into our information and harming the
city's data, and that is what the committee would like to see happen.
Ms. Wright stated that what the committee is looking at regarding the time
