1) Terminal storage rese[vo4 which'provides for not only pre-settling to the treatment <br />unit, but provides for a more uniform and consistent water quality. <br />2) The facilities have the capability to retum backwazh water direcdy to the temzinal <br />storage reservoir. Variable speed <br />drive units were originally installed for plant flexibility and adjusting for changge in water <br />qualiry conditions. The plant haz also Found that if operarions of the rapid mix unit is <br />impaired, adequate additional mixing can be achieved by adjustmef Lhe s dathe water <br />drive and flocculator units. This type of operating flexibility hu greatlY ass <br />treatment plant operators in maintaining the Texas Optimization criteria on settled water. <br />4) The sedimentarion basin is equipped with tube settlers for enhanced clarification. The.- <br />Brown County Water Improvement District #1's plant was one of the first in West Texas <br />to urilize tube settlers for not only enhanced clarificarion, but for reduction of the state of <br />Texas required six hour detention rime. With the addirion of the tube settlers, the <br />sedimentarion basin detention time has been reduced from six hours to two hours, <br />resulting in a substantial construcrion cost savings while demonstraang excellent <br />clarificarion capabiliries. The sedimentarion basin also is uniquely designed to allow for <br />mechanical sludge collection in the fint half of the basin where the majority of solids aze <br />iniRally deposited. <br />5) The treatment plant is also one of the first in West Texas to employ decluring rate <br />filters. There aze two basic methods of operating filters. They diffec primarily in tha Way <br />that the driving force is applied across the filter. These methods are referred to as <br />constant rate filtration and variable dectining rate filtration. <br />In constant rate filtration as constant pressure is supplied across the filter rystem and tha <br />filtration rate or water leve( is then held constant by the action of a mechanicallY operated <br />
