APPENDIX. A
SAMPLE PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

.

Addu:

Tempering
Impulsiveness

Managing
A Desire For
Independence

Becoming
More Of A
Team Player

MANAGEMENT SUGGESTIONS

This section suggests ways to effectively manage this person, Each
management suggestion identifies a potential problem area for this candidate
and recommends an approach to optimizing his effectiveness on the job. For
some suggestions, reference books and other resources are listed for
additional recommendations.

The quality of his analysis and decisions could be improved by the
development of more restraint Encourage him to record his first thoughts or
"instincts," then have him return to them later and ask "tough" questions
about their usefulness, Suggest he play "devil's advocate" for himself to
critique his ideas or plans (and thereby improve them). Encourage him to ask
others to help generate alternatives and to judge these against his first ideas,
If necessary, require him to obtain approval before launching new programs
or initiatives.

His strong desire for personal freedom and independence could be
problematic in jobs requiring compliance with detailed regulations, structured
work roles, close supervision, etc, If this describes his work environment, you
should encourage regular discussions with him and be open to his thoughts
and ideas, In managing him, be certain that he is held to mutually agreed
upon performance standards and that his achievements are rewarded with
appropriate increases in autonomy.

His combination of high self-reliance and iow social interests may result in an
excessively independent work style. Especially if the work environment
requires close coordination among co-workers or a team-oriented approach,
he may need to learn to work more collaboratively than is his nature.
Encourage him to participate in team activities, to seek opinions from others,
and to share his expertise and knowledge. Also, encourage him to attend
team-building and interpersonal skill training classes.

Teambuildina: The ASTD Traine~s Sourcebook by Cresencio Torres
& Deborah Fairbanks.

@2004 - THE WATERS CONSULTING GROUP, INc.

Page. 12

'nll' INfo"I.\110N" 'RO'RIET^" INFO~\I.HION ."DTHE &>LE PROI'ERIYOF .c.G.!Nc.
1111' INI'O"'.\110' " NOT TO HE REPRODUCED FO' AN' 'E^",' WITIlOI.'1' 11 IE WRITTEN '£R"";oIO' OFWc.", INc.
