Minority Recruitment Committee Meeting
August 7, 1999
Page 7
that what the City has been doing has not been fair so far, and it is not
going to be fair.
City Manager Malone said he did not agree with that, but he certainly
would look to the committee's recommendations as to how we can
improve the attractiveness of the employment and how the City could
recruit applicants. City Manager Malone said the City's problem is that
there has not been minority applicants applying to take the test for the
Fire Department.
Mr. Armstrong again pointed out that you have to sell Paris. Convince
the applicants this is the place where they want to live, work, and raise
a family.
Mr. High agreed with Mr. Armstrong that applicants are looking for a
safe community in which to live and raise their family, and those are the
applicants to recruit. Mr. High also said there were a lot of kids from
Mt. Pleasant, Sulphur Springs, Greenville, Sherman, and Bonham who
will apply for employment with Paris Independent School District
because they have family or relatives or other ties to this community.
These kids want to be close to home, but far enough away so the family
is not in their business.
Mr. Burgin said he was a trained firefighter. That is his focus, he is not
a personnel oriented person, but he has taken any and every
suggestion that he could get, and would follow through on those
suggestions. Mr. Burgin said he was at East Texas University last year
and they told him about a job fair that was coming up. He asked to be
placed on their mailing list and they started sending him information.
Mr. Burgin asked those on the Committee if they hear of an opportunity
that they think might work or a contact person to get on a mailing list
to let him know. Mr. Burgin also said that he would be glad to go with
any of them to job fairs.
Mr. Graves told the Committee that they were going to have to forget
about the past and look to the future and if it takes a recruitment officer
like Paris Independent School District has, then maybe Mr. Malone
